The Department of Civil Engineering, Bayero University Kano was established in 1978. The Department started the B.Eng. programme in 1980, when it became an autonomous department in the Faculty of Technology. The first students were admitted in the 1980/81 session after a two-year pre-Technology programme.
Initially, the programme lasted three years after the pre-degree stage until 1984/85, after which it changed to a 4-year programme, and then a 5-year programme from 1990/91. The first batch graduated in 1985.
The Department integrates strong theoretical learning with practical exposure: workshops, labs (e.g., Materials, Soil, Structures, Hydraulics), SWEP in Level 200, SIWES I in Level 300, and SIWES II in Level 400. These build real-world skills.
It aims to produce engineers capable of design, research, development, and industrial management in both public and private sectors. Postgraduate programmes (PGD, Masters, PhD) began in 1999/2000 and 2007/2008 respectively.
The vision is to lead in research and education in Africa.
Committed to addressing African developmental challenges through cutting-edge research, knowledge transfer, and training of high-quality graduates.
To produce competent and professional engineering graduates with creativity, innovation, problem-solving skills, and entrepreneurship – capable of competing in a dynamic world.
The Department aims to produce high-quality engineering education at Bachelor’s level, advanced knowledge at Master’s level, and cutting-edge research skills at PhD level.
It also prepares graduates for career advancement and professional engagement in civil engineering or related fields, maintaining the highest ethical standards.
